Unstoppable Domains and the standard for Web3 identity

Signing in to a new online service with a Gmail, Facebook, or GitHub account now feels completely standard and natural. Google in particular created a sort of a universal standard of Web2 identity – but in Web3, things will be different. Instead of sharing your personal data with a Web2 company in return for easy one-click sign-ins, we will have NFT-based personal domains.

Our latest partner Unstoppable Domains is one of the leaders in this new and very promising market for decentralized domains. So far over 2.7 million domains have been created, and 500+ dApps already support sign-ins with Unstoppable Domains, including Brave browser, Trust Wallet, CoinStats, and MoonPay – and now also XP.NETWORK.

Apart from signing in to dApps, you can also use an Unstoppable domain as an actual domain for a website in Web3. For example, if your name is Sandy, you can get a domain like sandy.nft, park your personal website there, and also use this name to log in with dApps.

Every Unstoppable domain is minted as an NFT, and there is a one-time payment (between $10 and $100) to create it. You can select your own domain name (unless it’s already in use) and choose between extensions like .crypto, .blockchain, .nft, and .wallet. Unlike with regular domain registrars like GoDaddy, you won’t have to pay renewal fees: your Web3 domain is yours forever. You don’t lease it; you actually own it, forever (or until you sell the NFT).

An Unstoppable NFT domain puts you in control of your personal data and identity in more ways than one. For example, it’s an easy way to get paid or to receive NFTs from people, as it’s tied to a crypto wallet address. Indeed, your friends can just memorize your domain address like sandy.nft, but they will never remember an address like 0x0d7df42014064a163DfDA404253fa9f6883b9187.

Using Unstoppable Domains with XP.NETWORK

We are very glad to add Unstoppable Domains to the list of ways you can sign in to our NFT bridge. Simply select Unstoppable Domains in the wallet list and enter your domain name, then connect MetaMask.

The sign-in flow even includes an option to get a free domain with Unstoppable Domains. To be eligible for this free promo, the domain name should end with two numbers and contain at least 8 characters.

Unstoppable Domains smart contracts run on Ethereum and Polygon, though the domain names can be mapped to accounts on multiple chains. By the way, minting a domain on Polygon doesn’t require any gas. Once minted, the wallet address you used to mint it will be set as the owner of the domain.

Once logged in to XP.NETWORK, you’ll be able to use the bridge just like you always do: view your NFTs, select any NFT in the wallet and send it to any chain supported by XP.NETWORK.

Remember that any Unstoppable Domain is itself an NFT, so you can also bridge it to another blockchain, such as Avalanche or Elrond. There, you can list or sell such a domain like any other NFT.

We are excited to add a Web3 domain service to our ever-growing list of partners. Web3 identity is one of the strongest use cases for NFTs – something with universal utility and a potential to become the new standard of identifying users on the internet.

So far, most NFT-based domains are tied to specific blockchains: for example, Ethereum has Ethereum Name Service, Solana has Solana Name Service with .sol extensions, and so on. Unstoppable Domains stands out because it’s cross-chain: it supports Ethereum, Polygon, and now also Fantom. In July 2022, Unstoppable conducted a Series A funding round at an impressive valuation of $1 billion.

Unstoppable’s multichain approach aligns very well with that XP.NETWORK. A true Web3 identity should omnichain: instead of having an .eth domain name, one with .sol, another with .avax, and so on, you should be able to use the same NFT domain on all networks. At XP.NETWORK, we will work towards this goal: the road is long, of course, but also exciting.
